Numerous studies have been conducted to analyze efficiency of railways, however, limited research
has been focused on efficiency of high speed railway. In this research we compare efficiency of 17
major high speed railway stations of the world by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) which is
based on operations research. The inputs of the model are population of the city, number of high
speed services per day and the output is number of passengers using high speed services. The model
is solved by output orientation and stations of the case study are ranked according to their efficiency.
Tokyo and Ankara station got the highest efficiency scores. Impact of type of traffic, being old or newly
built as well as being through or dead end is also studied.

According to WHO statistics, Iran has one of the highest rates of road fatalities. This adds to the
importance of improving railway network and shifting passengers to it. The most fatal railway accident
of the past decade in Iran (HaftKhan ) occurred on 25 November 2016 in which two passenger trains
collided (rear-end collision); resulting in huge fire and over 40 passengers losing their lives. It made
headlines in the news and severely affected the image of railways in the society. The accident
happened at the distance of 291 kilometres from Tehran on the busiest route of the country (TehranMashhad). The causes of this accident were complex and a mixture of human error, use of new
technology (ATC), equipment failure, natural (freezing cold weather) and some shortcomings in
railway traffic regulations. This paper conducts a fault tree analysis (FTA) of the HaftKhan accident to
identify the root causes. A follow-up STAMP (Systems Theoretic Accident Modeling and Processes)
analysis is done to identify systematic ways of improving safety and avoiding similar accidents to
happen in the future.
